Lee Dixon lifted the lid in a recent conversation he had with Thierry Henry in which the legendary Frenchman compared the difficulties he experienced at the start of his career at Arsenal to the mixed start of Anthony Martial in Manchester United.

Martial announced himself in England with a goal when he debuted in the United States against his bitter rival Liverpool and was immediately compared to his compatriot Henry, but the 24-year-old flattered to deceive since then until a return promising in the form of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

The striker was well on his way to beating his best goal scorecard (17) in United colors – with 16 innings in all competitions before English football was suspended during the coronavirus pandemic – and Henry clearly thinks that his compatriot is capable find other equipment after that, if it achieves its potential.

Like Martial, Henry had an inconsistent start to life in the Premier League, but the now iconic striker quickly tore up the country’s defenses after a tough love from an experienced Arsenal team, including Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Nigel. Winterburn and David Seaman.

However, Henry believes that the current United dressing room does not have the hardened and imposing characters who could guide Martial in the same way.

Speaking on the Arsenal podcast Hand brake deactivated, club legend Dixon explained, “I talked to him about it [Henry] recently. We worked with Amazon Prime when they hosted the two games over Christmas. I assumed he knew Martial because they are from the same region in France, so I asked him about Martial.

“I said,” What does he look like? And he looked at me with that look he pretends to say, “Haven’t I told you about this already?” ”

“And he said,” He was just like me when I got to Arsenal. He needs to go through the process like I have done with you a lot and I don’t know if the Manchester United locker room is like that. ” He said it was his creation.

“To compare himself to Martial or another player, it really portrayed what Martial looked like and what his character looked like because he is super talented like Thierry and I think his development would have been similar.

“I’m not saying he would have been as good as Thierry – but would have been similar if he had been in the old United locker room with characters like what we had in our locker room. He certainly talks about it as a real learning lesson in his curve to get how brilliant he was. ”

Dixon added, “No, we didn’t kick the ball and we thought about what he was thinking, but we channeled him into the right areas at the right time and we didn’t Didn’t want to accept this stuff when he arrived. He didn’t train very hard, being a little sulky … it was not allowed.

“You are not allowed to come to our workplace and be like that. It was not a question of giving him some latitude here and there.

“It was: this is how it is, this is the Arsenal, this is how we dress, this is how we train and it is like that we behave. If you are in it, you are in it and you will be one of your friends. if you are not, you are not.

“I think it was a great thing for him. ”
