Lucy and Vanessa Seddon started their decorative antique business Helston Street in 2015. Initially they had a small outlet in Thorp Arch, then opened in Spark: York, before moving to Scarcroft Road in 2019.
Since then, they have survived the pandemic and the lockdown, and are still going strong.
What do you sell in Helston Street?
We sell a range of decorative antiques, many of which are from France where we have a home in the Dordogne Valley. We are also specialized in dried flowers. We all dry our own fresh flowers and create unique wreaths and bouquets as requested by customers. We also create pieces for other businesses locally and nationally, the latest being Christmas wreaths for Fired Earth to use in their storefronts.
What sets your business apart from others?
Everything we sell is unique, which you won’t find anywhere else. We personally source all of our vintage products by visiting fairs in England and flea markets in France, choosing only items that we would have at home. In doing so, the store is constantly changing and evolving, which keeps customers coming back regularly.
Being a Mother / Daughter team also guarantees an always warm welcome and atmosphere – we regard our clients as our friends.
How did the company adapt during the Covid-19 crisis?
During the lockdown, we focused our activity on selling online through our website. We have created a “Lock Collection” which means customers can send gift boxes to friends they can’t see. We have created very successful dried floral rainbows and wreath making kits that customers have made at home on zoom.
What’s your favorite Helston Street story / anecdote?
We are well known for our “dried floral ceiling” which hangs over the entrance to the store. This was inspired by a beautiful soap factory that we visited once in France at Collonges La Rouge. Almost every customer who walks through the door comments on it and it has been photographed multiple times!
