Vaccine passports ‘should be introduced’ this weekend for Premier League and EFL games across England as government likely to introduce new COVID-19 rules

Football fans across the country may have to prove their vaccination status in Premier League and EFL games starting this weekend.

The UK government is said to be increasingly likely to introduce a new set of coronavirus restrictions to deal with the increase in cases and the spread of the Omicron variant.

The measures envisaged would be a home work order and the introduction of vaccine passports for public events.

Sources in Downing Street have insisted that “no decision has been made,” but there is plenty of speculation that further action may be imminent.

New rules could be applied as of this weekend

The Sun reports that football fans will feel an immediate effect if these rules are introduced.

Clubs are expected to enforce these rules and prevent unvaccinated fans from entering stadiums, starting this weekend.

Premier League clubs were reportedly warned that further restrictions were likely at some point this winter at a recent shareholders meeting.

Fans are also expected to undergo temperature checks at the turnstiles and also stricter mask wearing rules to be enforced.

The coronavirus has spread to a number of Premier League clubs in recent days, with Tottenham having up to seven first-team players returning positive tests.

Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic and Brentford’s Ivan Toney have also tested positive in recent days.
