Tiger Woods will be back in action soon.
The 45-year-old golfer revealed on Wednesday that he will be competing in the PNC Championship next weekend in Orlando, Fla. With his 12-year-old son Charlie, his first golf tournament since he nearly lost his leg in a car accident. February 23 in California.
“Although it has been a long and difficult year, I am very happy to end it by participating in @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie. ” Woods tweeted.
“I play as a dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud. “
Woods shares Charlie and his daughter, Sam, 14, with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren. The couple divorced in 2010.
The PNC Championship, at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club Orlando, features champions of golf teaming up with family members. The two-round event will kick off on December 18. It will be preceded by a two-day pro-am tournament Thursday and Friday, although it is not clear if Woods will participate.
Woods and Charlie, who have turned heads in previous junior tournaments, competed in last year’s PNC Championship.
“We have been in contact with Tiger and his team for some time and are delighted that he has now decided to make his return to competitive golf at the PNC Championship,” said Alastair Johnston of IMG, Executive Chairman of the event.Last month, Woods posted an Instagram video of himself hitting balls on the course in the first clue that a comeback was near. It further fueled speculation when he took off with the driver on Saturday and Sunday during his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
It was speculated that the PNC Championship would mark Woods’ return to the sport. Golf Channel analyst Notah Begay III – who is a close friend of Woods’ – said the upcoming tournament would be perfect for the 15-time major winner, as he wouldn’t have to travel the course like in an event of the PGA Tour.
“Tiger can drive a cart, he can drive all the way to the golf ball and almost onto the green, so the walk might not be as stressful on the leg,” Begay said recently. “But also, he can play Charlie’s records. I covered them for the majority of this event last year, and Charlie was hitting most of the workouts because of where his tees are, and he’s such a good ball forward they were enjoying his workouts. because they were a lot farther than where Tiger’s balls were off the tee.
“Those are two essential things that I think could push him to show up in a few weeks with Charlie. I know the world would love to see it.
The PNC Championship was previously known as the Father-Son Challenge until it changed the title to more include family members. For the first time in 24 years, the tournament currently features No.1 player on the court, Nelly Korda, who will play with her father Petr, a former Australian Open tennis champion.
The next question for Woods, who shares the PGA Tour career record with 82 wins, is: when will he play in an official event? Prior to the announcement, Woods had explained what the future might hold for him.
“As for playing at Tour level, I don’t know when it’s going to happen,” Woods said last week in his first public appearance since the crash. “Now I’m going to play a trick here or there, a little hit-and-laugh.” This is something that for a while there it didn’t seem like I was going to do it. Now I am able to play golf. Now at what level, I don’t know.
