Following an incident leading to a violation of the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) code of conduct that occurred immediately after Friday’s semi-final between Argentina and France, French player Raife Gonessa has been suspended by the FIH technical delegate Adam Webster.
“In addition, the case will be referred to the CEO of the FIH for further examination by the FIH disciplinary commissioner,” said a statement from the FIH.
The Indian team will face France again in the Junior Men’s World Cup as the two teams go head to head for a third place finish. The two teams opened their campaign against each other in the tournament on November 24 in a fierce game which France won 5-4.
Following the loss to France, India claimed three consecutive victories in the 2021 FIH Odisha Bhubaneswar Junior Men’s World Cup, beating Canada 13-1, Poland 8-2 and Belgium 1-0, but lost in the semi-finals. 2-4 final match against Germany, missing the opportunity to play the final against Argentina.
During this time, France also had a terrific tournament, as they won all of their Group B matches, beating India 5-4, Poland 7-1 and Canada 11-1. In the quarter-finals, the French beat a defensively strong Malaysia 4-0. But their hopes of winning the trophy came to an end after their semi-final loss to Argentina 1-3 (0-0) via shoot-outs. (ANI)
