“David has taken a few weeks off but will be back on screen in a few weeks. Viewers are going to be shocked and he is about to be part of a dramatic storyline.

MailOnline has reached out to representatives for Coronation Street for comment.

Roy has been a mainstay of the cobblestones since arriving in 1995 and has become beloved for his romance and eventual marriage to his wife Hayley.

Viewers were devastated when Hayley passed away in 2014 after being diagnosed with end-stage pancreatic cancer, with Roy struggling to cope with her death.

Last week he made the shocking decision to leave Corrie after handing over ownership of his beloved cafe to his niece Nina (Mollie Gallagher) and taking a job as a cook in South America.

When Nina found out he was planning on moving, she begged him to reconsider his decision and even enlisted the help of his friends and relatives to convince him to stay.

However, overcome with guilt over knowing that Abi’s gun was responsible for Natasha’s death, Roy decided it would be better to make a fresh start and left Weatherfield by taxi.

David recently hinted at his upcoming departure from the soap opera, telling Inside Soap, “There are two outings for me: one for the character and one for David. Hopefully they don’t coincide, maybe they will.

“I know Roy’s departure will spark a reaction. It’s a big part of your life and of this popular culture.

He added: “He will be remembered for a long time. “
