Ralf Rangnick has £ 58m Erling Haaland alternative to consider for Manchester United – Omar Garrick – .

Ralf Rangnick has been confirmed as Manchester United’s interim manager and fans are starting to speculate on who he might suggest bringing the club in for the long term.
Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland is still linked with a move to United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had previously been in the running to sign Norwegian sensation RB Salzburg, but instead opted for a move to Germany.

However, another candidate has potentially emerged as a candidate for United’s next frontline leader and that is Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic. The 21-year-old is starting to garner interest from many clubs and while Haaland is currently operating at a higher level, there is reason to believe the Serbian might be a better fit for United even.

But who would be better suited under Rangnick as someone who could have an immediate impact at United but also excel in the longer term; Haaland or Vlahovic?

1. System

When looking back at Rangnick’s systems and what he has implemented in the past, it should be noted that he is tactically flexible.

Rangnick is not expected to be United’s manager at the end of the season and that’s when they would likely make their choice for a striker.

However, Rangnick will have a two-year advisory role, where he is expected to pick the next manager and have a say in who signs for the club. He also lays the groundwork for the next coach, so he plays a vital role in that.

Rangnick’s most common formation tended to be a 4-2-2-2, which he used for most of his coaching career. That changed at Hoffenheim, where he used a 4-3-3 and when you look at the current status of Haaland and Vlahovic it is the Serbian who plays in that system for Fiorentina.

This season he has scored 12 goals in 15 Serie A appearances and it feels like the 4-3-3 is more suited to United’s current crop of players than other squads.

In Dortmund, Haaland is playing in a 4-2-3-1 under Marco Rose, but some of United’s long-standing contenders, like Mauricio Pochettino, favor this system. Could this be a consideration as part of Rangnick’s thinking? Maybe, but based on what’s playing right now and Rangnick’s tactical history, Vlahovic looks better suited.

2. One-on-one review

Both Haaland and Vlahovic have been exceptional for their clubs in 2021.

Haaland has stolen most of the headlines due to his UEFA Champions League experience and scoring streak, but Vlahovic has quietly scored the goals and has only just started to stand out.

Haaland scored 27 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, while Vlahovic has scored 21 times on 37 occasions.

Vlahovic shoots in Serie A goals

Obviously, Haaland has enjoyed the best goals-per-game ratio, but based on this season it’s much more balanced.

Vlahovic has scored 14 times in 16 games in all competitions, while Haaland has scored 14 in 11 – a very close call, which underscores the level of talent of these two.

Haaland’s form is typical of his sensational rise at Dortmund, but it looks like a real breakthrough season for Vlahovic, who has the potential to reach an even higher level in a club with higher ambitions than Fiorentina.

3. Who would Rangnick go for?

This is purely speculative as it is unclear at this point who Rangnick would prefer to lead the line. To be fair, there isn’t much in between and either would be a great choice.

Rangnick is the one who appreciated Molde’s Haaland at RB Salzburg when he was sporting director at Red Bull and is said to have a close relationship with his father Alf-Inge.

Haaland also has Bundesliga experience, the league Rangnick has a great relationship with and might think Halaland is a better candidate.

On the flip side, Vlahovic will come at a lower price and is on track to achieve great things in his career and while his £ 65.5million release clause isn’t cheap it will be a fraction of the Haaland’s price, especially with the time running into its market. He doesn’t have any Champions League experience yet, but once he takes that step he could explode as much as Haaland.

It’s a very close call, but I think Haaland is ahead of this one.

Conclusion:I think Ralf Rangnick’s long-term influence would see him favor Haaland because of the relationship with him and the goals he would bring to United. As it stands, Haaland looks more likely to end up at Manchester City or Real Madrid and there will be more clubs for him. I don’t think United will win the race, but I wish I was wrong. There will certainly be a line-up for Vlahovic, but he’s cheaper and therefore likely an easier target for United to get in a crowded transfer market for forwards.
