The new variant of Covid-19 Omicron has now been confirmed in 22 locations in England.

The total number of cases is now 29, after the latest update from the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) confirmed seven more.

It is understood that health authorities are awaiting laboratory confirmation that the cases are of the new variant B.1.1.529, known as Omicron.

The UKHSA has said all cases that have tested positive for the Omicron variant, along with their contacts, are now in isolation, Manchester Evening News reports.

The complete list of confirmed cases of Omicron by local authority area is as follows:

Three new cases were also identified in Scotland, bringing the country’s total to 13.

The UKHSA said it is now performing targeted testing in areas where positive cases have been found to identify any new infections.

UKHSA Executive Director Dr Jenny Harries said: “We are continuing our efforts to understand the effect of this variant on transmissibility, serious illness, mortality, antibody response and vaccine efficacy.

“Vaccination is essential to help us strengthen our defenses against this new variant – please get your first, second, third or booster without delay.

“A booster dose for everyone over 18 is now recommended and will be available at least 3 months from your last jab of elementary school. Please accept this offer as soon as you are eligible to protect yourself, your families and your communities.

“Please be sure to wear a mask that meets government guidelines, including on public transportation and in stores, to help break chains of transmission and slow the spread of this new variant.”

“It is very likely that we will find more cases over the next few days, as we are seeing in other countries around the world and as we increase case detection through targeted contact tracing. This is why it is essential that anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 self-isolate and receive a PCR test immediately. “
