Michigan School Shooting: FBI, Detectives Search For Ethan Crumbley’s Parents After Prosecutors Charged With Manslaughter

The FBI, U.S. detectives and marshals are looking for the parents of a teenager accused of a school shooting after being charged with manslaughter.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, is in police custody after the attack Tuesday at Oxford High School, about 30 miles north of Detroit, where four people died.

Investigators say the handgun used was legally purchased by his father last week – apparently as a Christmas present – and was “freely available” to the teenager.

Parents of Michigan shooter ‘beyond neglect’

“Parents were the only people who knew about access to guns,” Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald said.

She said their actions went “far beyond negligence” and charged James and Jennifer Crumbley with four counts of manslaughter each.

Hours after the charges were announced, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said authorities were looking for them after their lawyer said they stopped responding to the messages.

“If they think they are going to run away, they are not,” Bouchard said.

He said a “Fugitive Apprehension Team” the FBI and the US Marshals Service were looking for them.

Ethan reportedly posted images of the weapon on social media, writing: “I just had my new beauty today” and adding a
heart emoji, Ms. McDonald said.

Her mother posted the next day that they were “testing her new Christmas present”.

It is rare for people in the United States to be charged with shootings committed by their children, even though most obtain the gun from their parents’ or other relative’s homes.

However, there is no law in Michigan that states that firearms must be closed to minors.

Authorities believe the couple could drive a black Kia Seltos SUV with the DQG 5203 license plate.

The prosecutor said Crumbley’s parents met with school officials hours before the shooting after teachers found a drawing of a gun, a person bleeding and the words ‘help me’.

Crumbley has been charged as an adult with crimes including murder, attempted murder and terrorism.

Michigan schoolchildren go into hiding during shootout

He allegedly came out of the toilet and opened fire in a hallway. Seven students and a teacher were shot dead before he left.

Three of the students died on Tuesday and the fourth died on Wednesday.

The victims were Tate Myre, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17.

The school was locked after the attack, with children taking shelter in locked classrooms as officers searched the premises.

When he heard about the shooting, James Crumbley returned home to search for the gun and discovered it was missing, prosecutor Ms McDonald said at the press conference on Friday.

He then called authorities to say he suspected his son was responsible.
