Here are Alasdair’s thoughts on this Spurs roster today
Antonio Conte has shown with this training that he wants his first XI (technically 10) to be established in the Premier League.
Thursday night’s game against Rennes will bring a sort of play-off with Vitesse welcoming Mura in the other game to see who will advance to the Europa Conference League to face another play-off.
Today’s roster suggests this game could see a side at least partially on tour, with next Sunday’s difficult trip to Brighton also to be considered.
Spurs miss both Emerson Royal and Bryan Gil through illness, which brings Japhet Tanganga into the squad and Joe Rodon and Dane Scarlett return to the bench, the latter recovering from an injury.
Tanganga being picked as a winger early on will be a big blow to Matt Doherty, with Conte opting for a less natural winger in the role.
It could mean that the Irishman will start on Thursday and Sergio Reguilon might also need a rest at some point today as he may have to start again against Rennes due to Ryan Sessegnon’s suspension.
Tottenham hope to continue their Premier League momentum under Conte, especially with inconsistent results for those around them.
This formation still lacks that creativity in the middle and it puts pressure on the first three and the full backs to make things happen.
However, with each passing game, players learn what Conte wants during the 90 minutes and each performance should, in theory, improve.
