Brian Kelly is going to have to find a quarterback.

A week after taking the LSU job and causing an uproar over how his Notre Dame exit went, Kelly’s starting quarterback Max Johnson announced on Tuesday that he would enter the portal of transfer. His brother, Jake, the top ranked tight end of the 2022 promotion, has also announced he will be stepping down.

The Tigers had already lost a quarterback earlier this year when Myles Brennan entered the portal and now only have one QB fellow on their roster: real freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

To complicate matters further, Nussmeier will lose his red jersey if he plays at the Texas Bowl, having appeared in four games this year.

Johnson, whose father Brad made a career in the NFL, threw 27 touchdowns and six interceptions this season.

LSU has five-star Walker Howard enlisted for 2022, but like all other rookies, Howard enlisted when Ed Orgeron was the coach. Kelly will need to do a bit of homework to consolidate the class which, despite two top 50 hopes, only ranks 24th nationally and ninth in the SEC, by 247Sports.

The Tigers have had a disappointing 6-6 this season and will face Kansas State in the Texas Bowl.
