New analysis of immunization data in the United States shows the staggering toll COVID-19 continues to take in parts of America that voted overwhelmingly for former President Donald Trump – a gap that is largely due to media illiteracy and disinformation which has spread rampantly in the right. circles during the pandemic.
In fact, NPR data analysts have determined that people living in counties that voted for Trump last year are nearly three times more likely to die from the virus, a statistic that is also worsening as the percentage of votes increases.
The publication looked at the death rate in around 3,000 counties nationwide, starting in May 2021, when vaccines became widely available to the general public. Specifically, counties that voted at rates above 60% for Trump had a COVID-19 death rate that was 2.7 times higher than equivalent counties that switched for Biden.

And in October, the 10% of countries that voted most strongly for Trump had nearly six times the death rate of equivalent blue counties, NPR found. Today it is somewhere around 5.5.
After vaccines became available earlier this year, political affiliation was by far the strongest indicator of vaccine status – more than any other demographic point, including age, race or gender. . For a while in the first few months, other groups like African Americans expressed hesitation, but now those differences have largely been erased, according to NPR.

“An unvaccinated person is three times more likely to favor Republicans than Democrats,” Liz Hamel, vice president of public opinion and polls at the Kaiser Family Foundation, told NPR. “If I wanted to guess if someone was vaccinated or not and I could only know one thing about them, I would probably ask what their party affiliation is. ”
