Kate Garraway says Derek is in “terrible condition” after inflammation “goes through the brain” – .

Kate Garraway described her husband Derek Draper as being in “terrible condition” after becoming the most affected living Covid patient in the UK.

Appearing on Piers Morgan’s Latest Life Stories, she says contracting Covid in early 2020 “devastated” him and he was hit “from top of head to tip to toe.”

She reveals that despite returning home, Derek is still unable to fully communicate and has mobility issues.

Kate, who is the mother of 15-year-old Darcey and 12-year-old Bill, says, “I feel like I’m walking through a burning furnace or falling into a rabbit hole. The world has darkened and I’m still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, really. “

“Derek is believed to be the most affected living Covid patient in the UK,” Piers points out. “He spent 13 months in hospital – the longest stay of anyone who survived the disease. What has Covid done to your husband? “

“It devastated him,” she says. “From the top of the head to the tips of the toes. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure the inflammation has passed through the brain.

“He still can’t communicate, he still has mobility problems. Basically he’s in terrible shape. Listen, he’s alive, Piers. “

However, Piers also reveals a conversation he had the night before with Derek that left him stunned.

Piers clarifies: “We had a moment last night when I called you about this interview. Without warning you said to me, ‘Why don’t you talk to Derek?’ and Derek responded when you said it was me, very loud, clear, ‘Hello.’

“And I said a few things to him and at the end he said, ‘Thank you. I was stunned. “

“Well, so do we,” Kate replies. “The caregivers who were with me at the time broke down in tears. I mean, I don’t mean to suggest that you are a Piers healer but it was a remarkable moment. It’s times like that that make you realize he’s in there.

“And we’ve had more – he’ll turn to me and say, ‘I love you. “”

Piers continues: “Every time he says something like that, there is this hope that comes back to you saying: ‘I am here, I am alive, keep going. “”

Kate nods, “I think you’re right and I think I’m going to cry already.” He’s there ! He fought so hard to stay in this world and I will never give up on him. It will have moments of clarity and it is as if it disappears again. “
