BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA) – Jacqueline Avant, the wife of music director Clarence Avant, was gunned down Wednesday in an apparent home invasion in Beverly Hills.

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but did not survive. At an afternoon press conference, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook confirmed the woman killed was Jacqueline Avant, 81.

“The contributions of the Avant family to the entertainment world and to better communities across Los Angeles are unmatched,” said Stainbrook. He said the department was in contact with the family and offered their support and resources.

Avant was the wife of 90-year-old music director Clarence Avant and the stepmother of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Clarence Avant, who was not injured in the shooting, is known as the “godfather of black music” who worked with Louis Armstrong, the SOS group, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Babyface.

Clarence Avant and a security guard were present at the time of the shooting, but they were not injured, Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook said he was asked to thank everyone for their messages of support and condolences on behalf of the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an extraordinary woman, wife, mother, philanthropist and Beverly Hills resident who made immeasurable and positive contribution and impact to the artistic community. She will be missed by her family, friends and all the people she has helped throughout her incredible life, ”Stainbrook read in the Avant family statement.

The Avant have been married for 54 years. Danny Bakewell Sr., who is the owner of the black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel, says he is a longtime friend of the Avant family and has been “extremely saddened” by the loss of such a beautiful person. .

“To her to be killed in such an insane way is unfathomable. There are no human beings more kind and generous than Clarence and Jackie, and that their home and their lives are violated in such a violent manner is unacceptable, ”he said in a statement.

Homicide investigators are at the house, located in the Hollywood Hills, between Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

“I can’t believe this is happening in our neighborhood,” said Vida Ardebichi, a neighbor who said she often sees the 81-year-old walking around.

While investigators have finished processing the scene, the investigation is far from over. Authorities said it was too early to determine the motive for the shooting. But in recent weeks, there has been an increase in home thefts, which prompted the LAPD to issue an alert last month.
