A military helicopter crashed in southern India on Wednesday while carrying the country’s top general, Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat, according to the TV station. State.
General Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat were among 14 people traveling in the helicopter, according to reports.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with General CDS Bipin Rawat on board, crashed today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash, ”an Indian Air Force tweet said.

At least four people were declared dead and three others were rushed to a general hospital in Coonoor, located about 6-7 kilometers from the crash site.

There is no immediate confirmation of the status of General Rawat or his wife.

TV footage showed the helicopter was on fire as local residents attempted to put it out. General Rawat is the highest ranking official in the Indian army. He is also an advisor to the Ministry of Defense.
