Hamilton, Ont. Confirms first case of Omicron COVID-19 variant – .

Hamilton health officials confirm the city’s first case of the Omicron variant.

Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) announced on Monday that there were two suspected cases of the Omicron variant after two people tested positive for COVID-19 following a trip to South Africa.

On Saturday morning, Public Health Ontario confirmed that one of those people had tested positive for the variant, which was first discovered in southern Africa last week.

This is the 12th confirmed case of the Omicron variant in Ontario.

“The outcome of the second case under investigation is being sequenced and expected in the coming days,” HPHS said in a statement.

The two people and their close contacts self-isolate and HPHS manages cases and contacts.

“It is important that the community remain calm and have confidence that all levels of government will follow the science with regard to the Omicron variant,” Hamilton deputy medical officer of health Dr. Ninh Tran said in a statement.

“Hamilton Public Health Services remains committed to keeping the community informed in the days and weeks to come as we learn more about the Omicron variant,” he added.

All Ontario public health units have been ordered to manage confirmed cases of COVID-19 that have traveled overseas in the past 14 days as a patient under investigation for Omicron.

Toronto yesterday confirmed its first three cases of the Omicron variant found in two people returning from a trip to Nigeria and the other who had traveled to Switzerland.
