Garth Crooks admits Nuno Tavares’ impressive performance against Newcastle has kept him on his radar now.

The 21-year-old was a constant threat on the wing in the 2-0 win over the Magpies and also provided the assist for Bukayo Saka’s opener.

Tavares made a transfer from Benfica this summer and had to be patient while he waited for his chance under Mikel Arteta given Kieran Tierney’s consistently reliable performance.

The Portuguese have been going about their business quietly with a streak of games since Tierney got injured and Crooks is excited about what will happen to the youngster.

“That kid got past me, but he’s definitely on my radar now,” Crook said of Tavares after nominating him to his BBC Team of the Week.

“I’ve always admired full-backs who aren’t afraid to try and make an impact on the game.

“If Tavares didn’t come up against the opposing half of the field with the ball, he was trying to get one of his team-mates on goal.

“Bukayo Saka’s assist for the goal was quite brilliant. “

Saka was the second gunner named in the Crooks squad with the Arsenal academy graduate helping to earn three vital points for the home side and send them fifth in the Premier League table.

“From the start of the game, Saka looked like a serious player,” said Crooks.

“He scared Newcastle a bit in the first trades of the game, but the Geordies survived.

“However, it was only a matter of time before this brilliant young talent exposed Newcastle’s weaknesses on his right flank.

‘Saka scored a fabulous goal, matched with a superb display of commitment and effort. I can’t wait to see this boy take his next penalty just to see how much he’s grown since the European Championships. ‘

Saka and Tavares hope to keep Arsenal’s decent run going when they face Manchester United on Thursday night.
