Fully vaccinated traveler frustrated by new COVID-19 testing rules – .

Coming home for some travelers again means staying in a quarantine hotel – and for some, vaccination status doesn’t matter.

“I have three tests saying I don’t have COVID. Like, it’s negative, I’m fully vaccinated, I just want to go home, ”Jessica Sirois said from her hotel near Pearson Airport.

Sirois a few in Cairo on November 26. Four days later, Egypt became one of 10 counties banned from flying to Canada under tightened restrictions due to the Omicron variant.

“When I left the country there were no restrictions, so… everything was fine,” Sirois said.

Then the rules changed. To get home, Sirois had to take a negative PCR test in Cairo before getting on the plane. Then she had to undergo a second negative test in London, England to board a connecting flight to Toronto. After her flight touched down in Toronto, Sirois was tested at the airport and sent on a school bus to a quarantine hotel.

“I do everything the government told me to do, and yet I’m penalized for it right now. “

The 31-year-old says food is dropped off three times a day, but rarely communicates with staff. She describes the interior of the hotel as being covered in plastic, with security on the doors. Sirois says it’s difficult to speak with staff, even after getting a negative test result Monday morning.

Sirois says she was a little hesitant to leave the hotel because it’s a bit intimidating and she’s worried about possible fines.

“When I walked in, everything was like covered in plastic,” she said. “You know it was scary and there is security and like, yeah I got a little bit but I’m scared to go.” “

The negative test result arrived at 11 a.m. on Monday morning. Sirois finally got permission to leave the hotel for a little after 5 p.m.
