Fiji loses opening match against France – .

Olympic champions Fiji lost their first game in the Dubai 7-a-side return leg last night, losing 22-17 to France.

Just like last week, France scored the first with a try after taking advantage of a loose pass from Fiji.

Fijian striker Joseva Talacolo scored his country’s first points by running for an unconverted try on the restart.

France had most of the possession in the first half and tried to break through the Fijian defense.

Fiji’s defensive effort paid off when they returned the ball in a blackout before Filipe Sauturaga showed up for his second try.

The French managed to keep the ball alive for an extra minute and a half in the first spell before securing another try for a 12-10 lead.

Captain Josua Vakurunabili put Fiji back in the lead in the first minute of the second half when he was put in place by Talacolo following an incredible job from Kaminieli Rasaku.

However, the experienced French team added two successive tries for a 22-17 lead with less than two minutes to go.

The Fijians had a chance to turn the game around, but couldn’t hang on to the ball.

Fiji face Spain and Argentina in their other group matches.
