As it turned out, Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffered a minor injury against Chelsea and was unavailable.
It was a great chance for Dalot. It was his first Premier League start since 2019, having fallen out of favor under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Dalot’s previous start was in the Champions League against Villarreal when Wan-Bissaka was suspended, and he lost that one, returned by Arnaut Danjuma, and didn’t warrant a second chance.
His performance against Arsenal was a big success in comparison.
Dalot proves a point
Regardless of Wan-Bissaka’s physical form, Dalot has a chance to debut against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
His performance against Arsenal showed he could justify another opportunity.
United will have Ralf Rangnick in charge of this match. Dalot’s return to the lineup and his return to form could be perfectly timed.
Dalot was solid against Arsenal despite the side conceding two goals in the loss.
He was fluid and tested goaltender Aaron Ramsdale with an early shot on goal.
Dalot led the team in tackles (3), made two interceptions and three clearances.
The right-back also won four aerial duels and, on offense, he consistently offered an outlet even though United did not use him particularly effectively.
Wan-Bissaka’s development has stalled, and despite this, Dalot hasn’t had too many real opportunities, which will have him questioning his future at the club.
Rangnick will have his own ideas of what he wants in a right-back, and whether Dalot or Wan-Bissaka is any closer to that.
Dalot certainly didn’t hurt his chances against Arsenal, and while his chances of being United’s best right-back were slim ahead of the game, they at least increased a bit after last night.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, David de Gea and Bruno Fernandes have all been excellent against Arsenal and deserve praise. But Diogo Dalot was the big winner of the evening.
