Eddie Howe couldn’t contain his glee after securing his first victory as Newcastle United boss.
The Magpies held on to a slim lead given to them by Callum Wilson in the first half before retaining the lead in the middle of a busy second period.

Looking back on Newcastle’s first victory in 195 days, Howe said: “I am absolutely delighted for everyone connected with the club.

“It was a huge game for us and I thought the guys reacted.

“After the first 20 minutes, we were great today.

“We were very nervous towards the end because we were desperate for the win.

“The players handled this part very well.

“The spirit of the group showed itself and the atmosphere was exceptional.

“I can’t say enough good things about the supporters. “

Howe has now won two draws, one win and one loss at Arsenal in his first four matches.

He said: “We have tried to bring our philosophy to the team.

“Be avant-garde and be more aggressive.

“We have technical players and athletes.

“Confidence is a key in any sport and we were lacking it.

“But today goes a long way to rebuild this. “

Howe said keeping Callum Wilson fit and firing was key this week and moving forward.

He said: “It was tricky this week with three games in one week and keeping him in shape, but he was excellent today.

“His finish for the goal was classy.

“It will be vital for us.

“We will need him before now and the end of the season.

“The list of matches does not look nice.

“But we can only tick one off at a time.

“Historically, we’ve said you have to take points away from the top teams and that will be the task in December.
