At no point during the visit did Kelly hint or suggest he would be leaving Notre Dame. The Merriweathers weren’t aware of any rumors either; family members were not on their cell phones while they entertained the coaches.

But during the visit, according to Dom Merriweather, Kelly came out for a 15-minute phone call. Shortly after her return, coaches and family members sat down for a home-cooked meal of stuffed eggs, grilled shrimp and burnt breast tips. The visit continued for another 90 minutes.

“He came back and sat down and acted like nothing had happened,” Merriweather said of the phone call. “He was cool as a cucumber. “

About those burnt ends, though: “(Kelly) had three servings,” Merriweather said.

This is why the Merriweathers were ‘shocked’ just minutes after Kelly and his assistant coaches left the house at 5pm to see reports that Kelly was heading to LSU. Social media screenshots were immediately sent by Tobias Merriweather to Notre Dame assistant coaches for clarification. They had just left in a luxury SUV.

An answer came immediately.

“They weren’t more than a mile from our house,” Dom Merriweather said, when he replied by text.
