Ben Stokes did not retire after hitting 42 of England’s 56 balls against England Lions

Ben Stokes backed his two wickets Thursday by scoring 42 points on 56 balls in England’s last warm-up before the Ashes against the England Lions in Brisbane.

The Lions went 226-4 at Wellington Point in Queensland, with England responding on Friday’s final day with input from Stokes and 37 others from opener Rory Burns, the two lefties did not give up.

Chris Woakes took an early wicket for the Lions as Haseeb Hameed fell for seven, while Dawid Malan and Joe Root also left for single-digit scores of eight and nine respectively.

Jonny Bairstow was fired on first ball and Jos Buttler on second before the game got closer to late middle practice with a number of players hitting twice and some switching sides.

This got James Anderson playing again and he hit twice with two balls, while Mark Wood also claimed a wicket.

England and Australia’s preparations for the five-test round, which begins in Gabba on December 8, have been plagued by rain.

England’s three-day training match last week was called off with the exception of 29 overs and the first two days of the second warm-up against the Lions were also called off without a ball being thrown.
