10 wickets in one round! Ajaz Patel of New Zealand, third cricket test pitcher, achieved the feat

Ajaz Patel is the third pitcher in Test history to win 10 wickets in one set, after Anil Kumble and Jim Laker

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel became the third pitcher in Test history to win 10 wickets in one round as he sent India back to his hometown of Mumbai.

Left gunsmith Patel – who emigrated with his family as a child – matched the feat of Indian counter-thread Anil Kumble against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999 and English counter-thread Jim Laker against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956.

Patel’s highlight came when Indian defender Mohammed Siraj dominated Rachin Ravindra on the second afternoon at Wankhede Stadium.

Patel finished with 10-119 from 47.5 overs as India all beat 325 in 109.5 overs in their first innings – before New Zealand was beaten by just 62 in response to concede a deficit of 263.

Patel: The stars aligned for me

Patel’s casualties included Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja for ducks, as well as top scorer Mayank Agarwal (150) and his namesake Axar Patel (52).

Speaking after being transported from 10 wickets, Patel said, “It’s pretty surreal. I don’t think you ever really believe you’re going to achieve something like this, so doing it is pretty special. I am in illustrious company.

Patel’s numbers are the best of a New Zealand bowler in the cricket test, beating Sir Richard Hadlee’s 9-52 against Australia in Brisbane in 1985

“I think I am very lucky. The stars aligned for me to have an opportunity like this here in Mumbai, the place where I was born. It was a pretty special occasion for me and my family.

“It was about finding a good rhythm and being repetitive, asking the hitters good questions.

England and Kent wicket batsman Sam Billings said Sky Sports News: “I don’t think people realize how difficult it is, especially in India.

The 33-year-old picked up four wickets one day – Shubman Gill (44) caught slipping, Pujara bowled, Kohli pinned lbw and Shreyas Iyer (18) fell behind – as India closed the 221-4.

Patel then trapped the final six wickets on day two, starting with Indian goalkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha (27) trapping lbw with a ball that skidded early in the morning.

Ashwin was absent on the next delivery, knocked down by a beauty who spun just enough to pass the baton, as India slipped to 224-6.

Agarwal then left shortly after hitting 150 for the third time in tests as Patel caught him to leave India 291-7 and the bowler sensing a transport of 10 wickets.

Axar – who added 67 with Agarwal for the eighth wicket – became Patel’s eighth victim as he was out before taking a successful exam in New Zealand.

When Jayant Yadav (12) lost his life, Patel was on the verge of history and then there were some crazy celebrations when the bowler fired Siraj to join the illustrious 10 wicket club.
