The new working group was created to accelerate breakthroughs in emerging technologies to decarbonize aviation.

Virgin Atlantic, Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines have launched a new Aviation Climate Working Group (ACT) with the Boston Consulting Group to address the challenge of CO2 emissions. The new non-profit organization was created to accelerate breakthroughs in emerging technologies to decarbonize aviation.

As the aviation industry focuses on decarbonization, a portfolio of solutions will be needed to achieve net zero by 2050 and to scale up sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to achieve a 10% SAF target by 2030. ACT will drive innovation in the next generation of technologies, primarily focused on critical mid-term solutions, such as synthetic fuel and direct air capture. Over time, the portfolio will expand to include shorter-term solutions, such as emerging bio-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) pathways, and long-term solutions, such as hydrogen technologies. . ACT’s mission will be supported by two pillars: an innovation network and a collaborative forum to help accelerate innovation and accelerate adoption.

Amelia DeLuca, Managing Director of Sustainability, Delta Air Lines, also commented: “We are still too far from real and scalable solutions for clean air transport. We need SAF to be as accessible as oil and for new engine technologies to hit the market exponentially faster if we are to meet industry goals. These coalitions help us make a more effective impact on our carbon footprint by pooling our resources and funding to define the next chapter in sustainable aviation. “

Air France-KLM has also signed a letter of intent in which the group declares its commitment to cooperate with the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative.

“The climate emergency is arguably the biggest challenge our industry faces today. All the employees of the group and its airlines have been working for many years to reduce their environmental footprint, but we must now accelerate our transition to more sustainable air transport. The SBTi commitment illustrates our desire to achieve this, by placing our emissions reduction trajectory within a scientifically indisputable and demanding framework.
