City, who were beaten 2-0 by Mauricio Pochettino’s side in Paris in September, will look to build on Sunday’s 3-0 win over Everton and extend their winning streak in all competitions to four matches, as they tried to qualify for the last 16.
Guardiola, who has seen his City side win three of their first four Group A games, made three changes to the squad that beat Rafael Benitez’s troops this weekend, one of which is imposed.
Ruben Dias, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Riyad Mahrez have entered the squad, meaning Aymeric Laporte, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden have dropped out of the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Jack Grealish is out of the day’s squad.
Guardiola has been reasonably consistent with his selection picks lately, only making changes when forced on him, like Kevin De Bruyne missing at the weekend after contracting coronavirus last week. He is unavailable again this evening.
Unsurprisingly, it was Foden’s absence that caught the attention of City supporters the most on social media in the wake of the announcement of his starting lineup. City have not confirmed why he is not involved, but it is almost certainly an injury issue. Meanwhile, some supporters have raised concerns about the overall thinking behind the starting lineup.
Here’s what some City supporters have said on social media in response to his not being included in the squad.
As you can see from the posts displayed above, Guardiola’s overall selection left a few fans scratching their heads, while others worried about Foden’s absence.
Starting composition of the city: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo; Rodri, Gundogan, Zinchenko; Mahrez, Bernardo, Sterling.
Alternates: Steffen, Carson, Ake, Jesus, Laporte, Fernandinho, Palmer, McAtee.
