Tiernan Darnton sentenced to life after Truth or Dare confession – .

21-year-old British man has been sentenced to life in prison after confessing in a Truth or Dare game that he killed his stepmother – whose death in a fire was initially ruled accidental, reports show .

Tiernan Darnton set fire to Mary Gregory’s home in Heysham, Lancashire on May 28, 2018, trapping the 94-year-old woman, who was found under a table in the veranda of her smoky bungalow, the BBC reported.

She succumbed to her injuries four days later and her death was initially treated by fire investigators as an accident caused by a cigarette, Sky News reported.

But police reopened the case in 2019 after Darnton made incriminating comments about his stepfather’s mother in a counseling session, claiming he had lit a curtain at her house and others were aware of his crime.

He made a similar confession several weeks after the fire in a Truth or Dare game in which he told two friends his “darkest secret.”

“I have a secret that I haven’t told anyone – maybe I killed someone,” he told his friends, adding that he set on fire because he didn’t. wanted more than her stepmother had dementia, Preston Crown Court has learned.

In 2019, he reportedly spoke to a counselor of a friend “who might send me to jail because of what he knows” – and then confessed to the counselor and his stepfather, Chris Gregory, 66, that he set on fire, the Guardian reported. .

“Murder has been on your mind for some time,” Judge Amanda Louise Yip, who sentenced Darnton to life with a minimum of 15 years behind bars, said Thursday, according to the media outlet.

“From your own evidence, you were fascinated by serial killers and their crimes. You were having dark thoughts. The internet searches you did before and after killing Ms. Gregory paint a worrying picture, ”she said.

“Your opportunity to act on your dark thoughts arose when your stepfather was away. In the early hours of May 28, 2018, you went to Ms. Gregory’s home and deliberately started a fire in one of the rooms, ”the judge continued.

Drawings of Mary Gregory’s floor plan were presented to the jury.

“It’s hard to imagine the horror Ms. Gregory must have felt when she realized her house was on fire and was filling with smoke. The neighbors heard his cries. Despite her fragility, she tried to get out, but she was trapped, ”she said.

“His last days were spent in the hospital. Completely understandable, his condition at the time continues to haunt those who loved him. The manner of his death was particularly cruel, ”added Yip.

On Darnton’s cell phone and laptop, investigators found post-fire Internet searches that included “I’m a murderer,” “I’m a monster and I’m going to hell” and “I want to talk. the evil “.

The jury also saw detailed drawings at Darnton’s home depicting the floor plan of the victim’s bungalow.

“No one could seriously think that trapping an elderly woman in a burning building was an act of mercy,” the judge said.

Gregory’s son Peter told the court that Darnton’s actions – who had “no biological or legal connection to our family” – continued to plague his family, the BBC reported.

“To learn that my mother’s death was at the hands of Tiernan Darnton, whom we had voluntarily welcomed into our family home, is disgusting and overwhelming,” he said.
