Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for the Premier League home game against Arsenal on Thursday as the club did not receive the required documents for Ralf Rangnick.

The German has been appointed interim manager until the end of the season but has yet to get a work visa. A statement from United said: “Although the club go through the regulatory process around a work visa, Carrick will continue at the helm. “

Whether Rangnick will have any influence on squad selection and tactics regarding Arsenal’s game may become clear when Carrick speaks to the media at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Carrick, a former United midfielder and now a member of the coaching staff, was named goalkeeper after Ole Gunnar Solskjær was sacked following the 4-1 defeat at Watford earlier this month. The 40-year-old picked up a 2-0 victory at Villarreal which sealed qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League and Sunday’s draw at Chelsea. For every game he has shown a willingness to make tough calls – dropping Bruno Fernandes for the win at Villarreal and Cristiano Ronaldo for the 1-1 result at Chelsea.

Rangnick is expected to bring a more structured ethic than under Solskjær and he too faces selection dilemmas. These include the uneven form of captain, Harry Maguire, at center-back, and regarding Ronaldo. At 36, he may not be able to adopt the high pressing style that the German coach is famous for. With United hosting Crystal Palace on Sunday at Old Trafford, it would be a surprise if Rangnick wasn’t in the dugout at the time.

United’s last Champions League group game with Young Boys, which is also at home, could be moved to a neutral venue due to Switzerland’s Covid restrictions. While the club are hoping the Young Boys will be exempted from traveling to Manchester for next Wednesday’s game, the decision rests with the local government of the Swiss club’s canton of Bern.
