Mel Gibson is set to direct a fifth and possibly final installment of the “Lethal Weapon” franchise at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The fifth feature film in development was apparently out of place when franchise director Richard Donner passed away last July. Richard Wenk, who wrote the two films “The Equalizer” directed by Dezen Washington, wrote the last draft.
Donner’s wife and production powerhouse Lauren Shuler Donner apparently helped Gibson take over as director’s chair and will produce the film with him and Dan Lin.
Gibson himself revealed the news during a speech at an Experience With … event in London on Sunday with The Sun newspaper quoting the quote:
« [Richard] was developing the script and he went pretty far with it. And he said to me one day, ‘Listen, kid, if I kick the bucket you will.’ And I said, ‘Shut up.’
He is indeed deceased. But he asked me to do it, and at the time I didn’t say anything. He told his wife, the studio and the producer. So I will lead the fifth.
The first two “Lethal Weapon” films remain iconic watermarks of the action genre, while the third and fourth didn’t drop the quality ball as much as other franchises from the same era. The fourth film was released in 1998.
