Manchester United face MILLIONS to reimburse Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff – including goalkeeper Michael Carrick – after they all secured new three-year contracts weeks before his sacking

  • Manchester United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Watford loss
  • The decision came just weeks after his coaching staff received new contracts
  • Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Richard Hartis signed deals
  • United now risk paying millions in compensation if coaches leave

Manchester United risk paying millions after handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff new three-year contracts just weeks before sacking him.

As Sportsmail revealed, assistant Mike Phelan signed a new deal last month, and sources have now revealed that he is followed by the rest of the coaching staff, including Michael Carrick – now interim boss – the first team coach Kieran McKenna and goalkeeper coach Richard Hartis.

The logic of this decision will be called into question as doubts had already been raised about Solskjaer’s future.

Now that he has been sacked, it is likely that any new manager will bring in his own staff, which means the compensation paid to Solskjaer’s men will run into the millions.

Sources say the deals were made over the summer, when Solskjaer signed his extension, and it took time to work out the finer details.

They added that the owners have principles when it comes to discussing contracts and they are unlikely to give up on the deals they’ve made, despite the club’s form having taken a dip.

Until recently, Solskjaer retained the full backing of United’s board.

There remained a desire to stick with him until the end of the season, but Saturday’s humiliating 4-1 loss to Watford made his position untenable and the ax fell.

United face a substantial financial headache, with sources claiming many players want sweeping changes from the coaching side.

Old Trafford bosses are looking for an interim manager until the end of the season.

Even if the coaching staff stick around until then, it’s likely that the next permanent manager will oversee an expensive cleanup.
