Gareth Southgate reveals Man Utd star Mason Greenwood has rejected England appeal – .

Not so long ago, Gareth Southgate said one of his proudest achievements as England manager was getting to a point where NO players wanted to show up for the national team .
Now, as he prepares to attempt to finalize a spot for next year’s World Cup, Southgate admits two of the country’s brightest young stars HAVE DECLINED accepting a call-up.

Jude Bellingham is back in the fold for games against Albania and San Marino but, it turns out, decided not to make himself available for last month’s qualifiers against Hungary and Andorra.

Greenwood, however, has put his very brief international career on hold until next year, despite having played over a hundred games for Manchester United and scoring a host of important goals.

Southgate denies there is still any fallout from the moment 14 months ago when Greenwood, 20, was sent home in disgrace after breaking Covid rules in Iceland.

The England manager explained: “There is nothing to suggest that what happened before is affecting things… it is not. We tried to choose it.

“But whatever else really, it’s fair that he speaks because I might not be able to portray him in the most fair and thoughtful way.”

Should Mason Greenwood play for England? Comment here

“I think I’ve given everyone a glimpse of how it is and where I’ve been fair, which is to say he absolutely wants to play for England.

“He recognizes that there is a bit of a way to go and if he doesn’t do it right and fix the situation at the club then maybe there is no England career of anyway. So I think that’s an integral part of his thinking. “

Bellingham, 18, wanted physical rest last month and Southgate has said he understands that reasoning.

But while Southgate said a young player’s refusal to accept a call-up would not affect future opportunities, he seemed less impressed with Callum Hudson-Odoi’s refusal to join the Under-21s.

Southgate said: “Callum thinks it would be better to defend the team with Chelsea. I think he has a better chance of impressing us if he’s also with the Under-21s, frankly.

Other talking points surrounding Southgate’s latest picks included the omission of Kieran Trippier and Fikayo Tomori.

But it’s the absence of Greenwood – now recognized as one of the country’s most natural finishers – that will continue to confuse England fans.
