After having received the Ballon d’Or 2021, Lionel Messi believes that France Football – which awards this distinction – should hand over the 2020 trophy to Robert Lewandowski after his second place in the last edition.
Lewandowski has scored 55 goals in the 2019/20 season, 48 in 2020/21 and currently 25 goals in all competitions this season. However, France Football has canceled the 2020 edition of the Ballon d’Or due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the pole’s odds on the favorite to win. However, he received the title of striker of the year 2021.
“I want to tell Robert [Lewandowski] that it is an honor for me to compete with him ”, declared Messi after receiving his trophy.
“You deserve your Ballon d’Or. Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner. I think France Football should give you your Ballon d’Or and [you should] have it the way you deserve it.
“I hope that France Football can give it to you so that you can have it at home, because you were the fair winner. You must have it at home. “
Messi won the Copa America with Argentina in 2021, his first trophy at international level, as well as picking up the Copa del Rey with Barcelona and finishing top scorer in LaLiga Santander.
“It’s amazing to be here again,” said Messi.
“Two years ago I said it was my last years, and I didn’t know what was going to happen, and now I’m here again.
“After that they started asking me when I was going to retire and today I am in Paris. I am very happy and very excited, looking forward to continuing to fight for new challenges.
“I don’t know how much I have left, but I hope it’s a lot, because I like it. Other times I won this award and always felt like something was missing.
“I felt emptied of something, and this year I was able to realize the dream I wanted so much [to achieve] after having fought and suffered many falls.
“This award is largely due to what we [Argentina] made in Copa America. “
