CAMP SHELBY, Mississippi (WDAM) – Two World War II veterans attending a reunion at Camp Shelby have been honored by France for their courage on the battlefield.

Norvin D. McClure, 97, of Indiana, and Arthur M. Newell, 96, of Ohio, both received the Legion of Honor in a mailing ceremony Saturday morning.

It is the highest military medal in France.

McClure and Newell were members of the 65th Infantry Division.

He was activated at Camp Shelby in 1943 and served in Europe in the last months of the war.

McClure, a combat engineer, was recognized for his work in personnel mine clearance.

Newell, an infantryman, was honored for capturing 20 enemy soldiers with the help of another infantryman.

The awards were presented by Vincent Hommeril, Consul General of France in Atlanta, Georgia.

” Sir. McClure and Mr. Newell, you are true heroes, your examples inspire us for the future, ”Hommeril said in a speech before the medal presentation.

“It’s a great honor and I really wasn’t expecting it, but I’m proud to have it and will honor it forever,” Newell said.

“Well, I am very grateful, yes. I am very honored, ”said McClure.

The 65th Infantry Division has held a meeting at Camp Shelby in recent days.

The reunion ends on Sunday.
