Former Japanese Princess Mako Komuro Leaves Country For New York With Her “Commoner” Husband

A former Japanese princess left the country for a life in New York after giving up her royal status to marry her “commoner” husband.

Mako Komuro was pictured on a plane bound for the United States with her new husband Kei on Sunday.

The couple, both 30, tied the knot in a small ceremony on October 26, which saw her lose her imperial status.

Speaking at a press conference announcing their wedding, Ms. Komuro said, “For me, Kei is a very important and indispensable existence.

“He’s someone I can’t live without and marriage is that decision we need to live, staying true to our hearts. “

Her husband added, “I love Mako. I want to live the only life I have with the person I love. “

They are moving so that Mr Komuro can continue his legal career at a US law firm, after failing his first attempt at the New York bar exam last month.

Their marriage drew massive criticism from the Japanese public, who help fund the Imperial Family through taxes.

Although members of the Japanese imperial family have previously married “commoners,” Ms Komuro’s decision has sparked particular outrage in the age of social media.

Ms Komuro is the niece of the current Emperor Naruhito – who is also outside the Japanese upper classes.

According to the law of the imperial house, only men can carry the line of succession.

This means that Mako’s 15-year-old brother will now take the throne upon the Emperor’s death.

She met her new husband 10 years ago while the couple were studying at Tokyo International Christian University.

They got engaged four years ago, but have been separated for three years, due to Mr. Komuro’s studies in the United States.
