UPDATE: 1:25 p.m.
Houston Police said the Astroworld tragedy appeared to have happened “within minutes.”
Eight people died and hundreds were injured in a stampede during Travis Scott’s set at the Astroworld music festival in Houston, Texas on Friday night, and police said the speed of the incident took them by surprise.
“It happened all of a sudden. It looked like it just happened… in a matter of minutes, ”said Deputy Executive Chef Larry Satterwhite. “Suddenly we had several people on the ground experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode. “
According to the Houston Chronicle, Scott stopped his set several times when he spotted distressed fans near the front of the stage. He asked security to watch them and help them out of the crowd.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo called it an “extremely tragic night.”
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena told reporters: “We have had at least eight confirmed deaths tonight and dozens of people have been injured. The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, causing some panic and starting to cause injuries. People started to fall unconscious and this created further panic. “
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner added, “I think it’s very important that neither of us speculate. No one has all the answers tonight. If you don’t have facts, if you don’t have proof, I’m not going to speak against it. We have injured families here. “
