Last night Donald Glover offered the first taste of the third season OF Atlanta, and things seem a little strained. In subtly tweeting “Happy Halloween,” Glover shared the link for the Brooklyn-based website, which connected viewers to the first one minute teaser of the long-expected season (Note: The site is currently under construction and therefore is only a “night site” with opening hours from 8 pm to 3 am).

Over eerily silent clips of still art museums, closing elevator doors, empty streets and houses, Sun Ra’s “It’s After the World’s End” screams through desolate hallways. The teaser ends with a photo of Paper Boi (played by Brian Tyree Henry) staring ahead, pulling on a shirt emblazoned with the word “FAKE” as the minions stand facing the wall behind him. It’s a masterclass of intrigue and suspense.

The second season finale from Atlanta aired in May 2018, to be followed by a series of delays, in particular the pandemic. Since then, Glover has signed a solid multi-year deathl with Amazon and released another album under the name Childish Gambino. The third and fourth seasons of Atlanta were filmed and written together, one season set in Atlanta and the other in Europe.

In 2018, screenwriter and producer Stephen Glover (and Donald’s brother) said the third season will focus on more “female-centric” stories – a change of pace from the predominantly male-centric stories. At Projection des Emmys FYC 2018, Donald Glover has said that Atlanta’s third season is akin to a particular Ye album.

“I think I line up the seasons, like Kanye’s records,” Glover said. “I feel like it’s our Graduation. It’s probably our most accessible but also our most real – an honest version of it – and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album. We were all on iMessage together and sort of talking about it, and I think people were really hungry to love beating us up, which is great.

There is no release date set yet, but Atlanta officially returns in 2022. In the meantime, catch up on our Comments from the second season.
