Norwich City are set to appoint Dean Smith as their new manager. The latest Premier League club have reached a deal with Smith after a weekend of negotiations and are expected to announce the deal on Monday.

Norwich was keen to make a quick appointment after sacking Daniel Farke on November 6. They have struggled since winning promotion to the Championship last season and are hopeful that Smith, who is set for an early return to management following his dismissal by Aston Villa a day after Farke, can save them from relegation. .

Smith, who is close to signing a two-and-a-half-year contract, has an impressive resume and has impressed Norwich with his vision for the club in negotiations. The 50-year-old spent periods at Brentford and Walsall before being named by Villa in October 2018. He made an instant impact at Villa Park, bringing his childhood club back to the Premier League at the end of his first season .

Villa won the promotion by beating Derby in the 2019 play-offs final and Smith led his team to safety in their first season back in the top flight. He then lifted them to 11th place last season, but lost his job after a disappointing start to the campaign. Villa struggled after selling Jack Grealish to Manchester City and Smith was sacked after five consecutive losses.

However, his coaching credentials are beyond doubt and Norwich, who is five points below 17th-placed Watford, needs someone to wake them up after terrible form. They have won only once in the league this season, beating Brentford. Farke was sacked immediately after this victory.

Norwich, who also had talks with Frank Lampard last week, will need Smith to stiffen his defense and give him more ideas on offense. They hope he shoots more from Billy Gilmour – the Scottish midfielder has had little impact since joining Norwich from Chelsea on loan. Todd Cantwell is also hoping Smith will bring him back into the fold. The highly rated 23-year-old forward has only made five appearances this season.
