Brooks faces six murder charges after allegedly plowing his sport utility vehicle into parade participants and spectators. According to a police affidavit, he was sneaking from side to side to inflict maximum carnage as he sheared people. In addition to the six people killed, 61 were injured, including several children.
News of the Brooks fundraiser was first reported on Tuesday by Law Enforcement Today. The organizer has been identified as James Norton of Waukesha, who called the convicted sex offender “Our dear friend. “ The Page went on to say that Brooks was innocent and that he was “Another black man behind bars in a purely political and racist trial. “ He also listed several hashtags including « #BLM », « #NoJusticeNoPeace » and «#RacismIsReal. »
It is unclear what Norton’s relationship is with Brooks – whether he really knows the Defendant – or if he is sincerely trying to fundraise on behalf of the Defendant.
GoFundMe was criticized last year for refusing to authorize a fundraiser for the legal defense of Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager who claimed self-defense after shooting three men, two of them fatally, during a Black Lives Matter riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The platform had authorized campaigns for other people accused of violent crimes around the same time.
Facing new criticism last week after Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all charges against him, GoFundMe released a statement saying its policies prohibited fundraising in defense of those accused of violent crimes. “If anyone is acquitted of these charges, as Rittenhouse was today, fundraising was subsequently started for his legal defense and other expenses would not violate this policy.” said the company. The rule allows funds to be raised only after a defendant has been exonerated and presumably no longer needs legal defense or bail.
Brooks has already been released on bail twice this year. In one such case, in which the 39-year-old Milwaukee resident was accused of shooting his nephew, he was released in February after paying just $ 500. And just 10 days before Waukesha’s bloodbath, he was released on $ 1,000 bail after being accused of hitting the mother of his child and running her down with his SUV.
