Canada now has five Omicron variant cases – .

MONTREAL, Nov. 29 (Reuters) – Two more cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant have been detected in Ottawa, bringing the total number of cases in Canada to five, Ottawa Public Health said Monday evening.

Earlier today, Quebec discovered its first case of COVID-19 of the variant, health officials said.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé also told reporters that 115 travelers from countries affected by the new variant, mainly South Africa, had been called and asked to self-isolate and test for COVID-19 .

Quebec’s first case was a recent traveler to Nigeria, public health director Horacio Arruda said, similar to the two cases reported by the province of Ontario on Sunday. Read more

The arrival of the new variant ahead of the Christmas holiday season comes as Quebec faces a recent spike in the number of cases, mostly among the unvaccinated, Dube said. In the past 24 hours, Quebec has reported 756 new cases.

Dube urged travelers to rethink vacation travel and cautioned against big celebrations. The province limits gatherings in private homes to 10 people.

“The next few weeks will be critical,” said Dube.
