Brian Laundrie committed suicide with a gunshot wound to the head, a lawyer for the Laundrie family confirmed on Tuesday.

Laundrie was a person of interest in the homicide of his fiancée, Gabby Petito, 22, whose remains were found in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming in mid-September. A medical examiner confirmed that Petito died from strangulation.

After Petito’s remains were discovered, a week-long nationwide manhunt ensued for Laundrie, which ended when his remains were found along a trail in the wilderness wild Florida swamp on October 21. However, the coroner’s initial report was inconclusive.

On Tuesday, Steven Bertolino, lawyer for Laundrie’s parents, told the Guardian that the family had received a very detailed report from a forensic anthropologist.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been advised that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the death was suicide,” Bertolino said.

“Chris and Roberta still mourn the loss of their son and hope these discoveries will end both families. “

Laundrie was never charged in connection with Petito’s death, but federal agents issued an arrest warrant for the 23-year-old on September 23, after a jury charged him with using unauthorized debit card from Petito.

Authorities alleged that the laundry had used the card to make withdrawals of more than $ 1,000.

The Petito case has caught the world’s attention, in part because of the couple’s presence on social media.

The couple had posted photos of their trip across the United States to their social media accounts, but spooky body camera images and a 911 call that were made public hinted at the possibility of a darker side. of the relationship between Petito and Laundrie.

The couple were arrested outside the Moonflower Community Co-op in Moab, Utah, on August 12 after a 911 caller told police he saw Laundrie slap and punch Petito.

Images from the body camera showed Petito crying as she described a dispute that escalated into a slap of laundry as she drove. Police asked the couple to separate for the night, but neither Petito nor Laundrie were arrested and no charges were filed.

Laundrie returned home without Petito on September 1 in the Ford pickup truck the couple took on their trip. Petito’s parents held a funeral for their daughter in Holbrook, NY on September 26. In front of the funeral home, a chain link fence was adorned with posters featuring Petito and messages such as “She touched the world.”
