The director of A Star is Born believes the spooky encounter happened after he became “too comfortable” in the city and initially thought he was being approached by a fan instead of a thief wielding a knife.

The incident happened while he was on his way to pick up his two-year-old daughter, Lea, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend Irina Shayk.

“I walked around New York City all the time with these (headphones) on – that was before the pandemic. I was on the subway (11:45 am) to pick up Lea from downtown at the Russian school and was held at knife threat, ”he told Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast.

“It was pretty crazy. I realized that I had become far too comfortable in the city. My guard was down … “

Cooper added, “I felt someone coming. I thought, ‘Oh, they want to take a picture or something.’ As I turned, I’m up against the post like it’s The French Connection or some shit, and… I looked down and saw a knife.

We apologize, but this video failed to load.

He described the knife as being almost three inches long and the person wielding it as younger than he expected.

“I have my headphones on all the time. I do not hear anything. I just listen to music. So it’s marked, everything has been marked, ”he laughed.

“I don’t remember (what I was listening to). I look up, see the person’s eyes, and am in awe of their young age.

Cooper explained that he had been taught never to run away from a knife, but instinctively headed for the exit.

“I just started… running. I jumped over the turnstile, hid around the white, tiled subway entrance (and) pulled out my phone. He jumped over and ran away.

Adrenaline-pumped, Cooper ran after the assailant and took pictures of him.

“I took a picture of him. Then I chased him down the stairs. He started running on Seventh Avenue. I took two more photos of him, ”he recalls.

“I ran over two cops in an SUV, showed them the picture and I was talking to them, like, and the guy kept saying – it was so interesting – he was like, ‘Are you stabbed?’ I was like, ‘No, no.’ He said to me: ‘Check if you are not stabbed.’ What is happening is people are getting stabbed and they are in shock. I looked to see if he was right… ”he shared, indicating that he was luckily out without injury.

“And then I got back in the metro and picked up my daughter,” he concluded.
