On Wednesday, a volcano in southern Japan threw ash into the sky in a dramatic eruption.

There were no immediate reports of people injured around the Mount Aso tourist destination, but officials warned of the threat of lava flows and rockfall.

Dramatic footage shows the volcano, located at Kumamoto on one of southern Japan’s islands, Kyushu, sending plumes of smoke 3.5 km high.

Hikers rushed away from the column of ash, which could be seen for miles around and was captured on CCTV footage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the volcano’s alert level to 3 (on a scale of 5) and told people to stay away after the eruption at 11:43 a.m. local time.

He also warned of pyroclastic flows within a radius of about 0.6 miles from the mountain’s Nakadake crater.

The warning was issued for the city of Aso and two neighboring cities in the north-central region of Kyushu, Japan’s third largest island.

The volcano is the most active in the country.

Local police said no one was injured or missing on Wednesday evening local time and that 16 people who had hiked the mountain earlier in the day returned unharmed.

Ash from the 1,592-meter mountain is expected to rain in nearby towns, the weather agency added.

There was a small eruption at Mount Aso in 2019, while Japan’s worst volcanic disaster in nearly 90 years killed 63 people on Mount Ontake in September 2014.

Yoshihiko Isozaki, deputy chief secretary of the national government cabinet, said authorities were still collecting information about the eruption.
