Vancouver Island Selected as One of the World’s Top Tourist Regions by Lonely Planet – .

Another tourism accolade went to Vancouver Island, as our little corner of the world gained more attention globally, this time as one of the best tourist regions in the world, according to Lonely Planet.

Vancouver Island was ranked ninth best region in the world in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2022 and the only Canadian destination to make the annual list of the top 10 countries, cities and regions to visit in the coming year.

The Best in Travel 2022 is an annual collection of some of the “world’s hottest destinations and must-see travel experiences for the coming year,” according to Lonely Planet, a world-renowned guide and travel publishing company .

Lonely Planet’s number one region for 2022 is the Westfjords, Iceland – an area described by Lonely Planet as untouched by mass tourism where communities work together to protect and promote their spectacular landscapes – while West Virginia, in the United States, comes in second, and Xingshuabanna, China completes the top three.

“We are honored to receive such positive recognition for Vancouver Island as our tourism industry begins to recover,” said Anthony Everett, President and CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island. “As international visitors start to travel again, they will look to trusted travel authorities such as Lonely Planet for advice on which destinations to choose first. “

According to the travel publishing company, the list begins with nominations from its community of employees, writers, bloggers, publishing partners and more. Nominations are then narrowed down by our panel of travel experts. The best regions, countries and cities were chosen this year for their “topicality, unique experiences,“ wow factor ”and continued commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

“This criterion is particularly significant given Tourism Vancouver Island’s commitment to developing and promoting responsible and sustainable travel in the Vancouver Island region,” adds Janet Docherty, Chair of the Board of Directors of Tourism Vancouver Island. . “We thank the residents of Vancouver Island for helping to make the region a special place to live and visit.

Lonely Planet Vice President of Experiment Tom Hall adds that the release of this “hot list” could not be more timely as the world recovers from the global pandemic.

“After a forced disruption, it’s time to pull back those long postponed travel plans and make them a reality,” Hall said when releasing the list today.

“The lists celebrate the world in all its wonderful, alluring variety,” Hall continues. “From the lagoons and forests of the Cook Islands to the waterfalls and mountains of the West Icelandic fjords, to the natural and urban delights of Auckland.”

Earlier this year, Travel + Leisure, another recognized global travel publisher, ranked The Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino as one of the top 100 hotels in the world.

The Wickaninnish Inn, located at 500 Osprey Lane in Tofino, scored a total of 97.00 / 100 in the Travel + Leisure ranking, making it the 80th best Travel + Leisure hotel.

Tofino was also recognized by Travel + Leisure in a separate article, also highlighting the island’s travel destination as one of Canada’s 12 Best Small Towns.
