The Buffalo Bills have discovered that Monday night football is really a game of thumbs up.

The phrase may be one of the oldest clichés in the sport, but it was Bills quarterback Josh Allen who learned the lesson in a 34-31 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Buffalo was looking to respond with 3:05 to go after Derrick Henry stacked his third touchdown of the game. Bills returner Isaiah McKenzie had a 101-yard punt return for a canceled touchdown after a hold call. The Titans caught their breath.

Allen would lead the Bills into the red zone with a 31-yard pass to Emmanuel Sanders and a 20-yard pass to Gabriel Davis. At 3rd and 6th off the Titans’ 8-yard line, Allen tried to run for a first down but was stopped just before.

On the next play, Allen tried to squeeze in for a first down instead of hitting a basket to tie the game, but Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons refused after appearing to slip.

INVOICES PULL TITANS OVER SIDE FAILURE DURING PUNT RETURN

NFL fans watching the game wondered if choosing to go there instead of kicking the basket was a good idea.

The failure of the sneaky attempt wasn’t the Bills’ problem in the end – it was King Henry.

Henry was the only Titans player to score all of the team’s touchdowns. He had 143 yards on 20 carries with all three scores. He also had two catches for 13 yards.

Ryan Tannehill was 18-for-29 with 216 yards and one interception. AJ Brown led the Titans with seven catches for 91 yards.

Allen had a good game despite the save. He was 35-for-47 with 353 passing yards, three touchdown passes and one interception. Sanders finished with five catches for 91 yards. Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and Tommy Sweeney each have touchdowns.

Defensive backs Jordan Poyer and Kevin Byard each had interceptions.
