Liverpool lender Sepp Van den Berg is seizing the opportunity to expand to Preston North End.
The 19-year-old defenseman returned to Deepdale from the Reds this summer, after his six-month stint last season, and has been a mainstay of Frankie McAvoy’s squad.

Van den Berg impressed in his role as a right-winger in the league, having scored twice so far this season, and secured his first Netherlands Under-21 selection earlier this month.

After being named to the bench for the season opener, the Dutchman has always been there for Preston and has been applauded by his manager.

“He’s a fantastic kid who wants to learn and when you’re a coach there is nothing better,” McAvoy told Neil Mellor for LFC TV .

“We used him as a back winger. There are games he played as a central defender.

“So it’s about learning the different traits, being more comfortable with the ball, going forward, finding different areas to make yourself available to receive the ball and defending in 1v1 situations.

“He also has a good rate of recovery. And for me, he is evolving very well.

After signing with PEC Zwolle in 2019, the defender admitted he found it “difficult” to arrive on loan in the middle of last season.

But now settled in his environment, the teenager is thriving in his new position, even though he has admitted that it is still “different from what I’m used to”.

He lines up in Preston’s backline alongside former Reds academy player Joe Rafferty, who thinks he understands why Liverpool decided to sign Van den Berg.

“Physically, he’s a beast. He’s got all the attributes, he’s tall, he’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s fast, ”Rafferty said.

“And not just that, technically he’s really good. This is probably why Liverpool bought him.

“He ultimately wants to be a central defender and I think he has all the attributes to be a central defender. “

For the 19-year-old he is taking the opportunity to develop and return to Liverpool as a more complete player.

The defender made his Reds debut against MK Dons in September 2019 and hopes to be back in the first team next season.

« [The Championship] it’s really hard, it’s physical, it goes fast, it goes from start to finish, but that’s why I came back, ”said Van den Berg.

“I think that’s what I need to develop myself further as a player. It’s tough, but I enjoy every game.

“For me it’s about improving here and hopefully coming back this summer to Liverpool and showing them what I have and hopefully getting a place in the squad. “
