Texas Signs Bill Banning Transgender Athletes From School Sports

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday enacted a bill prohibiting transgender girls from participating in female sports in public schools. The bill is part of a wave of similar measures emerging from Republican-controlled state houses across the United States.

Trans rights advocates denounce these restrictions as discriminatory, “hate” -based measures whose real purpose is to energize hard-line social conservatives. They say there is little to no evidence that trans women or girls dominate the sport.

“We are devastated by the passage of this bill. Despite the powerful testimony of trans children and adults, families and advocates, and the many emails and appeals our community has sent to the governor’s office to veto this harmful law, it is now law, ”he said. said Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas. “Right now, we are focusing on our community and integrating curative justice concepts to provide defenders who have already been harmed by this bill with spaces to fill their cups and unbox the acute trauma caused by these sessions. legislative. Our organizations will also begin to focus on electing pro-equality lawmakers who understand our issues and prioritize representing the vast majority of Texans who firmly believe discrimination against trans and LGB + people is wrong.

Supporters of the bill, which is due to go into effect Jan. 18, say it aims to protect fairness in school sports by eliminating what they see as a physical competitive advantage inherent in transgender athletes playing on teams. female.

Seven other states passed similar laws this year as part of a nationwide Republican-led campaign that began in March 2020. That’s when Idaho banned athletes with male to. the birth had been awarded to compete in teams against those nominated as women in public schools or colleges. Enforcement of Idaho’s ban has been blocked in federal court pending the outcome of a legal challenge.

Other states whose legislatures have followed Idaho’s lead include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, and West Virginia, while the governor of South Dakota acted by decree. Some of them are also the subject of a legal challenge.

Yet at least 35 bills to exclude transgender youth from athletics have been tabled in 31 states this year, up from 29 in 2020 and two in 2019, according to a tally taken earlier this year by the National Conference of Legislatures. States.

The transgender sports measure is the latest in a list of right-wing bills advanced by the Texas legislature and the Republican governor this year, including laws imposing new restrictions on voting and abortion.
