Onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and sold in the United States have been linked to a salmonella outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday.

The CDC said whole fresh red, white and yellow onions were distributed by ProSource Inc. when they were last imported in late August. He noted that imported onions can last up to three months and can still be in homes and businesses.

Investigators are trying to find out if other onions and suppliers are linked to this outbreak.

The CDC advises companies to stop selling whole fresh red, white or yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource Inc. It also suggests that companies wash and sanitize any surfaces where these onions may have come in contact. .

Consumers are urged to discard onions that match the description above and to wash any surfaces and containers that these products have touched with hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

As of Wednesday, October 20, 2021, the CDC said there were more than 650 illnesses and nearly 130 hospitalizations in 37 states linked to the salmonella outbreak. There have been no deaths associated with the “rapidly growing epidemic,” the CDC said earlier this week.

Symptoms of salmonella typically begin six hours to six days after infection and most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, although some, including children under 5, adults over 65. and more and people with weakened immune systems, may experience more serious illnesses. These symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
