Deadline reports that Mattel’s plans the iconic doll—Directed by Margot Robbie in the title role and Greta Gerwig as director– to the big screen once again with his own film at Warner Bros. just added a major ‘figure’ (haha, oh Lord, kill me now). Trade reports Ryan Gosling has entered final negotiations to play the bachelor, casual lover and owner of many purchasable fabulous clothing sets-and sometimes the best male friend when Barbie hangs out with her friends: Ken. Deadline reports that Gosling was Gerwig and Robbie’s sole consideration for the vital role in the Barbie extended universe, but the actor had not previously joined the film …
It’s a weird story, for a weird casting process, for a weird movie, but I guess when you’re already doing live-action Barbie film and press mumblecore icon Greta Gerwig to direct (and co-write, alongside Marriage story‘s Noah Baumbach), you should probably expect it to be weird at this point. Gosling’s casting membership would bring the film project to the verge of going green light, before the shooting scheduled for early 2022. Details are kept in a real box of Barbie’s alternative career outfits right now, but suffice to say, whatever position Gosling takes on the smooth crotchless object of Barbie’s plastic affections turns out to be … it’s probably going to be even stranger than Toy Story 3version of the characters, to say the least.
We will bring you more about the inevitable absurdity of Barbie film as we learn it.
