The Red Devils confirmed Varane’s signing from Real Madrid to a four-year contract in August after agreeing to pay Real £ 34million, plus additions.
But Varane injured his groin in France’s final victory in the Nations League against Spain on Sunday and is now excluded for “a few weeks”.
The United center-back also started the Nations League semi-final against Belgium, but a prominent French expert was not impressed with his level of performance.
In a scathing review of Varane’s performance, former French winger Olivier Rouyer said the defender was where he was “thanks to Sergio Ramos” and that he “had not been at this level for the past two seasons” .
“I am extremely disappointed with Varane’s performance, whether with Real Madrid or the France team,” Rouyer told L’Equipe TV.
“I’m not saying he doesn’t have the level anymore. Can you say that [Sergio] Ramos has brought a lot to Varane. If he’s where he is, it’s thanks to Ramos.
“I reproach him for not strengthening this axis, for not helping [Presnel] Kimpembe grows up or young [Jules] Koundé who is coming.
“I have been an admirer of Varane, but I find that he has not been at this level for the last two seasons. I think it’s time to hand over the baton.
“We have to hope that Kimpembe will be able to move up a level, that he will return to the top with PSG when he has settled his problems.
“Maybe it can help Kounde, Lucas Hernandez and why not [Dayot] Upamecano and [Kurt] Zouma to confirm. Things have to change at some point.
