Ragnarok director Taika Waititi explains why they decided to remake Odin death scene – .

During the first days of development on Thor: Ragnarok, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) was going to die in an alley in New York. As the story unfolds, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) took him to the nursing home where he quickly left and became a vagabond in the streets of the Big Apple. Ultimately, Hopkins himself was a strong supporter of changing the scene into something more poignant. This is why Taika Waititi and her company finally chose to move the stage to a Norwegian field.

In an excerpt from The History of Marvel Studios: The Creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the filmmaker reveals that it was Hopkins who insisted on changing things.

Waititi then said the answer was simple – give fans the scene they’ve been asking for.

“I had to remember that we have to give the audience a lot of things they want, they aren’t cynics like us,” Waititi added. “They actually have an understandable desire for bits of emotion throughout these movies. So I realized, ‘We should definitely give them this version of the Odin death scene that they deserve and have been waiting for a long time now.’ “

During some comments on Marvel’s massive Infinity Saga Blu-ray box set, Waititi said the previous version of the scene was too practical.

“We originally shot some of this stuff on the set of our stuff in New York City,” Waititi said. “What we wanted to do was have them come down to Earth and see Doctor Strange and all that, but it was too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road in an alley and also everything, until then, everything was going so quickly and everywhere. We wanted to go somewhere peaceful and relax with these characters and be with Odin while he passed on this wisdom and stuff and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking behind their backs. “
